DigiSpotlight: All Eyes on TenishiaJuly 11th, 2011 ⋅ Music ⋅ by Megan
Flashback to 2004 when a chance meeting in a bar on the tiny island nation of Malta in the Mediterranean brought together Joven Grech and Cyprian Cassar, known to most of the world as the pioneering trance duo Tenishia. It was a case fate that these two would meet, quickly evidenced by their receipt of the ’2005 Best Newcomer Award’ only 8 months after their debut. Flash forward to the present, and Tenishia have proved just how far a little hard work (not to mention alot of talent!) goes. Their notoriety has reached an international scale- Tenishia’s productions can frequently be heard around the world in sets from Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Pete Tong and Markus Schulz, while the guys themselves are busy jetsetting to and fro, headlining shows around the globe.
With another ‘Tenishia Live’ show under their belt (that sold out this past weekend at what has to be one of the greatest open air clubs in the world, Gianpula in Malta) as well a mesmerizing chillout album in the works, we decided it was time to check in with Joven and Cyprian to find out what’s in store for them for the rest of year, where they would like to play in the US, and, just for fun, what super powers they would like to have.
Here’s what they had to say….
A warm digi10ve welcome to you both. Why don’t you start by telling us what you have been up to recently and where you are at the moment?
Joven: Ohh where should we start? We are busy people always coming up with something new, besides Traveling and Djing every weekend, we also organize our own events in Malta were we have a huge following and that is a lot of work! In studio we’ve been working on chillout album which will be released on Armada Records in August.
Going back to the very beginning, how did you two meet?
Cyprian: We’ve met true mutual friends, it was in a small bar we talked for hours then the next day we just went to studio to work together!
Tell us about Malta, what’s the music scene like there?
Joven : Altough it did slow down a little, Malta has a very good scene, good clubs and good events with most of the biggest Djs in the World visiting every year.
What’s been your favorite gig of 2011 so far?
Cyprian: I think it was Poland Entrance 2011 in March… the crowd was so up for it!
Joven: Hmm we’ve traveled quite a bit but I think i agree with Cyprian, Poland was amazing. There is a good video clip of it on our youtube page I still have a look at it from time to time… crazy crowd!
We are totally digging your new Frozen Roads Chill Out Album- the perfect compilation for a day at the beach. What’s your favorite track from the album?
Cyprian: We’ve build up the album like a sort of a little journey into music, any one who likes music should have a listen I reckon but if i will have to choose i will choose the Intro track of the album which we called ‘Frozen Roads’ as well as it just gets me into it and in the mood for chill out music
Joven: Shores of Eden is my favourite, It’s chill and aggressive at the same time besides the vocal aahhs just take me into another world.
As you probably know the US is really hot right now for the EDM scene, people everywhere seem to just be eating these tunes up. If you could play one US city or festival where/what would it be and what tracks would be in your set list?
Joven: We haven’t been to the US yet, although we did have a few request. We have heard about Ultra Music Festival and some cool clubs like Ruby Skye. For us it doesn’t matter in which city we are playing as music is Universal, it brings people together no matter what colour, no matter what religion.
Enough with the serious stuff, let’s get to know the real Tenishia. If you both could have one superpower, what would it be?
Joven: erm that’s a tricky one… probably flying so I don’t have to sit in an Airplane again! lol
Cyprian: mmmmm… I could heal all sickness… with just one touch
What are the rest of your summer plans? Any other news/exclusives you would like to share with your fans and all our digi10vers out there?
Cyprian: We have a very busy summer in Malta. Summer is great here, we already played a few cool events like Creamfields here got a Tenishia Event coming next week, a boat party next month and another event in Gozo which is Malta’s sister island. Besides that more production at the studio and some Jetskiing in between!
