Fader magazine has recently leaked that Spoek Mathambo, a wildly eccentric MC and DJ hailing from Johannesburg, will be performing at this year’s Fader Fort at SXSW.  I figured that the announcement was a good excuse for me to introduce him to all the readers out there who don’t know who he is yet and that maybe those attending SXSW can catch him performing at a show or two.  He is originally from Johannesburg and has recently signed with BBE/Boys Noize Records, but word on the street is he has just moved to Sweden. Recently, he has released a remake of Joy Division’s “Control” in a style that is now being called Townhouse Dark Wave (referring to the electronic music scene in his hometown) which is a genre that is a mixture of house, hip-hop, dub, dubstep, and African influences that many musical artists from South Africa are quickly categorizing themselves under. Though his style is an obvious pastiche of indie dance and electronic music here in the west, he still manages to stand out from all the Mad Decent wannabes that are out there.  Hope you guys like him!
